ASSN Guest Speaker Event - 15 August 2012
Nelle Frances is a special needs educator with over 17 years experience working with children with Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome of all ages. She authored the Ben and His Helmet book series written especially for children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). These social stories are set in mainstream classrooms and offer positive problem-solving strategies to assist children with ASC to navigate their world.
Nelle is the parent of a 21 year old son with ASC. She voluntarily facilitates a Social Group for adults (18–35) on the Autism Spectrum who meet every 3 weeks. Nelle regularly delivers her Professional Development Sensory Detective™ workshop to schools and libraries.
Her website www.aspergerchild.com offers resources, strategies and links on Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome for health care workers, therapists, parents and teachers. Nelle’s philosophy is that the sensory information processing difficulties associated with Autism Spectrum Conditions drive the behaviours displayed by children on the Spectrum, in particular meltdown behaviours.
Her talk will provide information and evidence on how/why this occurs, which will lead you to a better understanding of the origin of the behaviours displayed by children with an ASC. She will also show you how to become “Sensory Detectives” to find triggers to behaviours.
