Support Group – Girls
Where and when are the meetings held?
Meetings are held at 7:30pm on the third Friday of odd months (March, May, July, September and November) at The Nerve Centre, 54 Railway Rd, Blackburn. We also usually organise a social event on the third weekend of the even months.
What usually happens at a Girls group meeting?
This meeting acts more as a social and activity based group.
We start off in the common area with parents and girls, then we move off into adjoining rooms - girls in one big room with one co-ordinator and or the student psychlogist - and parents in another room for a chat.
The girls will then join together (facilitated by a co-ordinator, parent, or student psychologist) and may invite others to join a game they have brought along (we encourage them to bring activities). Many enjoy playing Nintendo D.S. and even make it a social experience by networking their DS's together! Parents are welcome to participate in the activities, or share a cup of tea or coffee. Please note: ASSN Vic cannot act as carer at this venue.
In the parent group, a co-ordinator goes round the room - inviting parents to discuss whatever is on their mind with parenting their asperger or autism-spectrum kids. Topics covered have included: puberty, school, bullying etceteras. The group offers suggestions or encouragement to assist, from their experience.
Around 9pm we get back together in the common area for a light supper, which is provided. However, if your child has specific dietary needs, it is a good idea to bring along a snack/drink. We have tea/coffee facilities as well.
We aim to finish at about 9:30pm.
Who runs the meetings?
There are 1 - 2 co-ordinators (parents of Asperger girls and members of the ASSN Vic committee) present and a volunteer psychology student currently participates in the meeting (sitting in with the girls).
Is there a cost to attend the meetings?
There is no cost for attending the meetings, however we would encourage you, after having been to 2 meetings, to become a member, which is $30 for full membership ($20 renewal).

What age are the girls?
Our group has an age range of 6-15 years at present. Some members are also now attending the Teen group as well.
