Frequently Asked Questions > Common Questions on AS > I’m not sure if we should tell people about the diagnosis. Do you have any advice?
This is an issue everyone struggles with at some point. Do you tell your child about their diagnosis, and if so at what age? Do you tell teachers, friends, and the wider community? If you are an adult with AS, do you tell work colleagues and friends? Or is it best to keep the ‘label’ to yourself, and only tell those people who really need to know?
While working for Autism Victoria, Melbourne-based psychologist Kirsty Kerr wrote a wonderful article “Sharing the Diagnosis”, which discusses all the pros, cons and ways of going about this most sensitive of issues. She has kindly agreed to provide it (Download here) at no charge.
The ASSN committee has also developed a couple of brochures to help explain what AS is. Please help yourself, and share them with your families and friends.
